car transporter trailers

anyone offer some pointers on the legalities surrounding the above?

had a butchers on ebay and laughed at the silly prices the're fetching so thought sod it i'll make one, nothing to big just large enough for the 205 going to trackdays and then pushed back onto once she breaks down

so i've got a caravan (single axle) stripped it down to the chassis and i'm going to hopefully get a bed on it tonight.

anything i need to consider when doing this? obviously weight is a factor but its sitting behind 2 ton's of dervy goodness and its a rotten french shed so not really that bad.

Main thing to look at is whether the caravan axle is going to be strong enough (I would think probably not), secondly may be helpful to have a look at some car trailer plans, and base design on those.

The caravan chassis will be made of cheese and the axles will not be strong enough to take the weight of a car, tools, tryes, ramps ect that you will put on it.

Cheaper and safer to buy a good second hand one then make one, and when you come to sell it you will get your money back, or even make a proffit.

Don't do it! No single axle caravan base is strong enough to carry a car. As well as the chassis, the wheels, tyres and brakes must be rated to carry the weight of the trailer and it's load. This will be at least 1500kg. Legally, any trailer over 750kg MUST be braked. From experience, single axle car trailers are bad news. You're better with a twin axle, far more stable. Also, car trailers are far more stable with the wheels either side of the bed, not under as the caravan one will be. This keeps the centre of gravity lower.

Also factor in rear legs to steady it when loading, a winch, ramps etc.

are a good parts supplier.

I've made a twin axle trailer from scratch before, and would say for the hassle and expense involved to do it properly, you're better off buying one second-hand.
