Golf Mk2 'scratchy' clutch

I looked at a half-decent Golf Mk2 yesterday but the one thing I wasn't too keen on was a clutch that felt rather rough. It disengaged/ engaged OK, but didn't do so in a smooth fashion.

It did feel like the clutch cable was on the way out but I was wondering if there are other, potentially more expensive clutch- related problems that would plague these?

Nothing particular to the Golf, though on the 1.8-1.8 engines the clutch is one of those back-to-front jobs where the release lever is at the end of the box, and a pushrod pokes down the middle of the input shaft.

Either the disc is sticking on the splines, the pressure plate is screwed, or the cable. If you already owned it I'd say try a cable first.

It's a 1.8 (8V GTI to be precise) and the disc sticking on the splines thought occurred to me. I've had that on a bike and I know how that movie ended[1].

Back to looking for another cheap-ish runabout then.

[1] Badly, on the side of the road, ironically on the way to the mechanic to get it sorted out. That was new input shaft time...

How many cars will you have in total if you fill that space in the fleet, then??? :-)

And what do you call 'cheap'?

Back to four. The Alfa is on fleabay, on account of what Paul's recommended Alfa specialist found. How that thing went through an MOT six weeks ago, I don't want to know.

Trouble is I need a runabout for insewerants purposes.

At least the Lancia got the thumbs-up from the other specialist I took it to, even though it did need some work (but smaller stuff) and a new radiator.

I'd like to keep it under 1600 quid as it's for 4 months only. Well, until roughly mid-April, by which time most of the shit in the sig with the exception of the Integrale will have to be sold or parked up with people who I actually trust to sell the car and give me the money afterwards[1].

[1] Nasty story on SELOC about a dealer selling customer cars, forgetting to give the customers the money and then closing shop, only to open another company across the road. Looks like a bunch of people lost between 10k-20k that way. I think it was on Pistonheads as well.

Oops.

Previous owner was perhaps a friend of the MOT inspector???

Ahhh...

Good stuff - looked more than solid to me when I went under it.

Some chap has been trying to offload a tidy looking P reg Clio diesel in 'another place' for weeks... loads of MOT and tax, group 5 insurance, and assuming he's still got it, =A3400 is what he offered it to me for.

Not exactly local though, that's the only pisser. (1)

The Ibiza is semi up for grabs at the mo (2), but out of your budget.

Hmmm... well if you know you're definitely going, probably best to start advertising the bits due to be sold off from around the start of February?

Most people will have banked their first lump of post Xmas pay by then.

:-O

Nice.

(1) Aside from it being a Renault, but they're not *that* bad tbh for what they are, as in they're comfy and reasonably economical, if not exactly a ball of fire.

(2) Much as I like it, three doors and a not that massive boot is proving to be a PITA at times, so I'm looking to get something like a Passat TDI estate, or maybe yet another Golf estate, but either way it'll need to be a 130bhp one.

Must be a *good* friend or the guy needs a guide dog...

Apart from the rad which only showed up once I started driving up proper hills, it's mostly small stuff of the 'they all do that sir' variety. It'll still cost a chunk but the response I got suggested that it'll be worth investing the money.

The guy I bought it from did look after it as well as he said he did. Nice change.

If it's a Clio and it don't say Williams on there, I'm not really interested. For various reasons, a proper tow vehicle is called for atm.

... and not that good at towing stuff, either.

That's the plan. Immigrant visa expires mid-May, my contract runs until the end of March so mid-April it is.

As mentioned, I'm planning to keep the Lancia - probably have to put it in storage here for a few years - and then import it into the US once it's old enough (2015). Hence I'm willing to spend money on it.

Anything else apart from some of the bikes (Morinis & the Laverda) will have to go.

Indeed.
