Golf oil pressure woes (MK2 8V GTi)

The Golf's playing up. Must be because I've polished it.

When the oil's warmed up to 80 odd or so, the oil pressure lamp comes on if the engine's allowed to idle. Rev it at all, and it goes back off. I've previously had the buzzer come on a couple of times during normal driving, (ie, above a couple of thousand revs, oil not stinking hot and not cornering like a loon) but it's always gone off after a second. Oil level is fine.

Pointers on whether this sounds like oil pump, dodgy electronics or the bottom end of the engine dying would be nice.

Try to locate a pressure sender from eurocarparts/partco/gsf first. Should be =A35-10 quid. Get the cheap and obviouse out of the way first.

It happened on my Favorit. So I changed the oil. It got worse. So I changed the sender switch. It never happened again.

Have you changed the oil recently?

Could be the pump, could be the pickup - have you given the sump a whack recently? As Carl said it could just be a dodgy sensor. I would just go for trial and error until it was fixed, but someone with a bit more knowledge may be able to help!

As for the buzzer - wouldnt worry about it. My main aim when I used to borrow my sisters Polo was to get that buzzer going. The little thing just kept going (with knackered head gasket) :)

Doki, do you want another one?

I know of a Mintish one just lapsed MOT H reg 400 quid.

17" rims not modded at all, bodywork is stunning, black, 2.0 8v needs handbrake cable, but drives fine.

I got some pics if anyone else is interested.

How did that happen?

Maybe the gauze over the pick-up is clogged. That reduces the flow at all engine speeds and needs the sump taken off to check - so it never gets done until the bearings or something else fails.

pull the buzzer and yank the bulb :)

looks damn tidy, i really like that!

It's had a new sump recently due to a pinhole in the old one, so it'll be easy to get off. Going to fir a new pump this weekend.

It does, similar shade of black to mine, unfortunately mines meant to be red but she is getting blacker faster than I can clean her with the amount of salt about on the roads at the minute :/

Damn! If I'd seen that yesterday evening I would've offered for that rather than the Civic VTi I just picked up. That looks real clean. Still available for £400?

I like the look of that golf Ronny, I miss my MK2 so much.

Can you tell me more about it? Is it digifant or otherwise?

What, other than the handbrake cable, is it going to fail an MOT on? Why is there a lack of handbrake cable? If it has rear discs, the calipers can be a bastard and the handbrake mechanism goes stiff or seizes.

What mileage, history etc?

Are the original wheels available?

Yup still available

Standard MK2 Golf GTI 8v - Black - no tax or MOT though, only just ran out, the guy whos car it is cba to piss about with it, so it's sitting on his drive.

Swapped the pump today. The sump gasket had been attached with silicone sealant at and bits of sealant had gotten into the oil and were clogging the pump pickup.

You wonder if the silicone was because someone was too tight to put on a new gasket, or a belt and braces attempt to make sure it didn't leak. There should be no need for extra sealant there anyway, if the surfaces are suitably clean for the new gasket. Lucky you didn't block an oilway with it - hope it still won't.

Pump pickup - the gauze bit, or the pipe itself?

Sort of related....

A friend of mine has just his A4 back from the garage following his oil warning light coming on "here and there".

After checking all the usual and finding no problems, they suspected the oil pickup (strainer). Unfortunately, on this model to get the sump off requires removing most of the front sub frame.

Long story short, all's well that ends well - yes the pickup was heavily clogged/gummed up. Bit of a clean and all now fine. Someone

Gauze. I stripped the pump and it was perfect. Backlash as per Mr Haynes.
