GTi = Grand Touring injection

No, generally they don't. The new golf GTi does have a turbo engine, but I can't think of any other gti's which do.

How about the little Daihatsu Charade Gtti :) great little car.

But that's a GTTI. ;)

Mk5 Golf GTi with the red I has a 1.8T engine.

Whatever the manufacturer says it stands for.

Once it meant a car that was fuel injected (the "i") and was comfortable enough to tour across Europe, etc (the "gt" = grand turismo or somesuch in Italian). That's more or less a description of any new car so they all qualify for a gti badge, but that's not good marketing so it tends to be a sporty version that gets the gti badge and the other models in the range have things like "1.6e" or whatnot to show they cost less.

That means it doesn't really stand for anything other than "sportier than the mundane versions".

No, and the majority of cars with "gti" on the back are not turbo.

I believe GTi stands for Gran Turismo Injection.....

Did that have the 150bhp version?

If so, did they do a 180bhp version as well? My brother reckons a mate of his has got a 180bhp Golf GTI.

I reckon they should badge them a bit like they do with the TDIs - red I for

150bhp, red T and red I for 180bhp, and all three letters in red for the 225bhp TT Quattro engine :-)

Yup.

Yeah - but it was a special edition to celebrate the GTI's 25th, which I think is denoted with a fully red GTI bade.

No, but the Mk4 got the 150bhp and the 180bhp

That was the plan but like the TDi's it didn't work out like that as the cars are shipped without the badges so it's the dealers that fit them unfortunately they don't necessarily come with the car they can come as just a pile of badges in the parts order. So often as not they just bung on what ever GTi badges they have to hand.

The best way to check is the engine code (probably still on a sticker in the boot with the paint code, option codes and quite a lot of other information only VW would find useful)

Most 150bhp golfs got the AGU code but some got ARZ or AUM, I don't know of any to get the ARX, APH, AQX AVC, AWU, AWV or VER codes but they are fitted to other VAG cars with the same base (Bora, Beetle, A3) there are also the AWD and AWW US spec 150 lumps.

180 bhp golfs tend to be AUQ or AUG

The Mk5 also has 2L turbo engines in the line up.

Almost. Traditionally it's always been "Gran Turismo" (hence the game).

Hardly any GTi models come with a turbo as standard, except for the Golf as has been stated.

But you can't really class the Mk4 Golf as a GTi tho, so it doesn't count anyway :)

IMO the Mk4 Golf is the best looking golf VW have made. Much nicer than the MK5

The look grew on me but the drive never did. I'd take an ugly, or different, looking, but better-driving-than-the-competition car any time.

Heh we did three and a half years ago! :)

As others have said, "Gran Turismo Injection." In German you might see "GTE," since "E" is the first letter for the German word meaning "Injection." Hence the Vauxhall GTE models (Nova and Astra), and older Mercedes with "E" after the badge, i.e. 190E.

As for GTIs with turbochargers, technically I can only think of:

Mark Four Golf GTI (some of them, they produced a 1.8, 2.0* and 1.8 Turbo) Mark Five Golf GTI (all, heh)

Some near misses would include:

Daihatsu Charade GTti has an extra "t" in there, but it's a GTI by any other name. Mark Four Golf GTTDI - the 130 PS or 150 PS 1.9 TDI engine in the GTI. Sometimes just badged GTI. Fiat Punto GT - for some reason Fiat didn't bother with the "I" bit. Or cornering. Or torque steer. Seat Ibiza Cupra Sport - the models above the GTI had turbocharged engines. GTis just 1.8 or 2.0 atmo donks. Vauxhall Astra GSi (actually and some other Vauxhalls). Used GSi rather than GTi, the previous generation Astra was available with a 2.0 turbocharged donk. Renault 5 GT Turbo - again no "i" but a turbocharger. Various Rovers had GTi then GSi badges, some had turbochargers. The 620 Ti dropped the "G" from the name. I've seen the 220 Turbo Coupe with a GTi badge but I suspect that's a "dealer option."

*The mark four Golf GTI with the 2.0 engine is not a GTI in any respect other than name. Actually the normal 1.8 isn't really either.

Dervy, how could you *possibly* miss out the AX GT? :-)

Wishful thinking?

Not quite sure what that's got to do with the Golf being a GTi...

No turbocharger....
