Time for a new motor

You can't get a *good* car for your £500 max, so it doesn't matter what you end up with.

As long as it will fit a bike in the boot, then voila - the criteria are met.

Plenty of those around.

Not many of those.

Plenty of those around.

There are an INFINATE number of ghetto cars around - plenty of which will fit a bike in the boot !

You can't be looking very hard !

LPG?

Buy a dodgy pre-converted one.

You will have killed it/sold it/rolled it before the Chancellor can bring the duty in line with Petrol.

The 900i isn't too popular. Sells for peanuts for Minters, only the Turbos and cabs make anything as=20 Chris said, and then the difference is silly.

Between the =A3900, and =A32.5 for a T16, upwards of =A32k and toward =A36k= for=20 a Cab depending on age, condition, history. Mileage doesn't really=20 matter for them.

Cambelt costs on the Audi 5 cylinder (FWD). 4 wheel alignment costs if you want a non turbo quattro coupe (and weight being an issue). Exhaust manifold cracks if you want a turbo one. But good cheap cars for the FWD non turbo Coupe if you can find a sound one with history and a fairly recent belt.

Toyota Corolla GTi 16. Not as much fun as a RWD AE86GT but still a good fun car that has been rallyed with success in the past.

Saab 900i or 9000 2.3i Big lumpy cars that will get anything you want in the back if you go for 900 hatch, or a 9000 CS(I/E). Might struggle with the bike in the back of a 9000 CD(I/E) boot is huge but maybe not quite big enough.

CD's are cheaper than CS's, l;ike Volvo Estates cost more than Saloons.

A while back there was a really clean E34 520i Touring on ebay that had been LPG converted. Went for £1900 or so - a tad on the pricey side, but the conversion had been done by a reputable company (IIRC) so it wouldn't have been too bad, it'd still be worth reasonable money, LPG or not, and would have probably averaged 24-28mpg, so easily the equivalent to 45-50mpg running on LPG. And it'd be a nice chain driven 6-cylinder petrol engine (though my belt driven 5-cylinder diesel is lovely!).

Nothing much wrong with the n/a 900i 16v though, just no ball of fire performance wise...

Exactley, that is what makes them such bargains. They still handle as well, and can still pick up their skirts and boogy,=20 you just don't get the neck snapping "Whooooooooooosh" midrange grunt of=20 the turbos.

I know that Malbrad have a very well built twin carb rally 900 16v that=20 is amazingly fast and can keep up with a lot of standard tune turbos.=20 And I think they hire it out too.=20

I'd have thought that they're out of my league pricewise.

Insurance is £1500 or so on a 2.3 5 cyl compared to £900 or so for a 2.0

4cyl.

The extra Torque is worth it, as it the lower age. Less time for things to have worn out completley.

At that price for a 2.3, I would expect the belt to be just about ready.

66% higher insurance premium = not worth it.

Thinking of a Mk2 Golf again now. Nice looking things, but I'm not sure about the insurance again. Are the Drivers any good?
