Plenty of choice there, just go for whichever one suits the budget. My old sat nav was a PPC based one from them, very easy to use and in some ways better than the £350ish garmin nuvi i have now.

How cheap is cheap? I bought a 4gig miniSD for my M700 phone. I installed tomtom on it because it has gps built in. Granted, to buy it would cost about =A350-400, but it is a phone with=20 bluetooth, infra red, mini-usb, more memory than an iPod nano, 2mp=20 camera, gps. Apart from FM or DAB it does almost everything I might=20 want.

I went for the TT510. The widescreen just looks so much better. Works fine too.

All the TomToms I've used have been great, all the Navmans pretty much crap. My garmin Etrex is fine as a GPS for tromping across the moors, but I have no idea what their navigation software is like. If it was my choice I'd get a cheapy TomTom, 'cos they work well and are easy to use.

Mine too. Doesn't have a gig of that lost to maps and software, and it and my phone together are smaller than an M700 :-)

To be fair, the geek in me loves the M700, but they are waaaaay too expensive for me, at least for now.

The M700 (the HTC Trinity, not the Glofiish M700) isn't much bigger than my old Z1010 when it was closed, and nearly half the size when open. It has a mich better screen, and the speaker phone option, plus a mainstream OS the run better apps on. Nice, geeky, cute, but if you don't want one immediatley, wait for the HTC Kaiser. That will be awsome.

After musing this for a while, I decided that whilst I liked PDA / GPS solutions, they were a little compromised and fragile. I wanted something that I'd be happy letting somebody else borrow and that Charlie would be comfortable using.

I also find a bright screen distracting at night, so I wanted something with a small screen.

I bought the Garmin i2, the monochrome brother to the i3. Either of these should do just fine. The i3's screen is better, but both have tiny little screens - they're more useful for the voice directions.

This was £90 as I recall, all in - everything you need.

Right.

So after reading all this I am no wiser! Other than the cheap tom toms are ok. Well thats what its going to be then... Thanks!

Don't know if these are any good.

They are the brand that Aldi sell as their own in store. They run a dedicated website of all the offer kit.

You can get a Garmin i3 for 80 quid these days.

I use one in the company shed, works very well - not as many features as TomTom, but I prefer it for everyday use.

My 510 changes colour and has adjustable intensity for night use. I assumed they all do.

TomTom units are very good...

...but arguably over the top for many people. And expensive.

I got a Navman F20 for the missus. It's dead easy to use.

The female voice on it nags more than the bloke though!! Honestly!!

They do. Night colours and map colour options have been available since at least TomTom 3 and I imagine earlier too.

Why OTT? As for expensive, you pay for what you get. I've seen and used those Medion things and the build quality, or lack of it, sticks out like a sore thumb and the address entry system is crass.

Why over the top? Because some people just need it to get them to the odd place every so often, don't tow, don't drive a truck or a bus and derive little benefit from a larger screen.

For these people it's over the top.

You're blaming the device for your inability to work with it. That isn't the i2 or i3's problem, it's yours.
