Anyone recommend a decent alarm? Preferably something reliable (ie, actually goes off when the car gets broken into, but not when it's just parked up outside my house) and a pager system would be nice.
There are a few around on the fleabay brand new - is there anything to stop me DIY fitting it other than problems getting thatcham approval?
Don't be a pikey and get a proper Thatcham Cat. 1 alarm / immobiliser fitted by a professional.

Depends on the car value surely. While it is worth protecting the car, is it worth spending twice the cost and 3 times the value of the car on an alarm, just to get a certificate that your insurer might not want if you told them it doesn't have an alarm.
A few years ago, after having the Cinq. broken into, we had a Cat 1 Alarm / Immobiliser with remote locking fitted for £250 by a bloke with a van on our drive.
It's worth paying that kind of money, IMHO - cheap alarm systems are a waste of time, plus you have all the hassle of fitting it yourself.
I'm not on about a cheap alarm though - Toad alarms etc. are available on fleabay and cost £100 quidish delivered. They cost about £250+ fitted for the same piece of kit. I doubt fitting is rocket science, but having had the last car mangled by theives I'm rather keen that this one isn't, so I would go pro fitted if there are compelling reasons to (ie, insurance costs or quality of fitting). FWIW this car will be worth more than the alarm ;), and the wheels go for £300 in fair nick...
Pay for pro. fitting.
If it goes wrong, you have some comeback. You'll save a bit on the insurance, and it saves you crawling around in a footwell in freezing conditions for a couple of hours.
Changing master cyl in a bit anyway...
