86 GT w Mass Air System - Questions

Oct 03, 2004 4 Replies

I have an 86 GT that has been converted to a Mass Air System. I have a couple of driveability questions I hope someone can help with.

  1. At an idle while in drive and fully warmed up, the idle speed fluctuates quite a bit. Any suggestions?

  1. Now that cooler weather is with us here in Chicagoland, the car is a bit more difficult to start when cold. Again, any suggestions?

Thanks!

What you are experiencing is common, there are several reasons for the so called "Engine Lope".

  1. Check your air flow by checkingf your filter, clean and recharge if warranted.
  2. Check your EGR valve and selonoid, clean if necessary.
  3. Check your ignition. (If you have an old coil replace same for your ignition wires) Use all Ford OEM products.
  4. How long has it been since you changed your O2 sensors?

I never met a Ford that did not like cold weather! If you track down the first problem the 2nd. should clear up.

Thanks for the suggestions! Got the car used, so as for the EGR and O2 sensors they need to be looked at. The other stuff is all pretty new.

Thaks again!

My 86 GT used to do this. It seemed to go away when I tweaked the timing and adjusted the throttle position sensor

I've heard this about the sensor adjustment. I'll look at that as well. Thanks
