99 Mustang Transmission help

My 99 v6 auto shift lever is stiff to move. When it hits the detents for drive it is still in nuetral and you have to move it past the drive and back up to get it to engage into drive. I can't figure out how to get the shift lever or even the covers off the shifter to check there. Other than the shift issue, the transmission works great, and shifts smoothly while driving. Vehicle has 215k on it and works great.

Any and all help appreciated.

Transmission Shift Control Cable and Bracket:

Transmission control linkage adjustments should be performed in the order in which they appear.

Note: The transmission range selector lever should be held against the rearward DRIVE stop with a 1.4 kg (3 lb) rearward load when the linkage is adjusted.

  1. Position the transmission range selector lever in DRIVE position. Make sure that the lever is tight against the rearward DRIVE stop.

  1. Raise the vehicle and loosen the manual control lever shift cable retaining nut. Move the transmission manual control lever to the DRIVE position, third detent position from the full counterclockwise position.

  2. With the transmission range selector lever held rearward and manual control lever in the DRIVE position, tighten the retaining nut to 17-23 N-m (13-16 lb-ft).

  1. Check the operation of the transmission in each transmission range.
