anybody know what sn95 part these are

guy in a forum posted this question:

"I asked this question on most of the Mustang websites when I had my '03 GT and nobody knew what they were. I've asked the local Ford parts guys and they have no clue. I've looked thru the Service Manual and can't find a mention of them anywhere. Now I get a new Cobra and I see they are on this car as well. I'm talking about the little black box directly behind each rear tire in the fenderwell. There is one on each side, they have no wires running to them, so I'm stumped. What do they do??"

anybody here know? ive often wondered myself. i dont think that my 96 had them

thanks in advance for any feedback

My 96 Cobra has those as well. The only explanation I have is that they are basically small weights, that serve the engineering purpose of being "tuned mass dampers". Its a technique of damping vibrations by adding a specific amount of mass, which effectively changes the vibration characteristics to something desirable or less undesirable. The mass can even be attached such that when stimulated, it vibrates out of phase with the problematic part, "canceling" (I use that word loosely) the vibration. Without them, there must be a low frequency shake or vibration present in that lower fender that some Ford engineer didn't like for whatever reason. Tuned mass damping was new to the Mustang in 94, the biggest use being on the convertible. There is a large one inside the right front fender to stop cowl shake. I understand Ford got the idea from Mercedes. I also believe it was later dropped from the car. All this comes via a mechanical engineer / Mustang lover at work that discussed this with me several years ago. So I may have gotten some of it wrong. I'm an electrical guy. Pass the oscilloscope please.
