I have a C4 that I know needs a rebuild. The engine is a 289 4bbl that has been bored and a Lunati 292(IIRC) installed. Local speed shop built the engine for me in 1988 and with divorce, new wife and just life in general, I've never gotten around to putting it in. Anyway, my question is, should I stick with a C4 or is there a better trans that will bolt right in for my application? Thanks Dave
Stick with it. It's way lighter than ANY other auto that Ford made and it can be made near bulletproof if you just HAVE to. Lotsa C4's behind drag motors out there. Just look in any Summit or Jeg's mags for parts that'll make it stout.
I've got a C4 behind my mild 300hp 302 in my Ranchero. Only upgrade was a Trans-Go shift kit. It works just fine without a peep of trouble.
C4 is good transmission. I have had several cars with C4s behind 289s and 302s and never had any problems no matter how hard I drove. I'm presently running a C4 behind a 65 289 4V A Code which has been lightly modified. Mine is a daily driver (when I can afford the fuel) which will be used around town and on cross country trips, so, I'm leaning toward the AOD conversion.

And within the past few days 66 6F HCS mentioned in the thread "Finally chose the engine for my 68 coupe!" transferring the 4R70W gearset into an AOD and get all the advantages of the wide ratio and you dump the whole brain box PITA. Since he posted to you, you may wish to inquire further about this. Sounds interesting.
