Goodbye Fox Bodies

4 Years ago I saw Fox body mustangs on the streets all the time. Now I almost never see one.

I see at least two of them every day.

You're right, though, they are becoming rare. That was the whole point of my thread, "Happy Birthday, Frog." The youngest of the Fox Mustangs is now 15 years old. Think about it - what's the percentage of automobiles running around today that are at least 15? And then what percentage of those are Mustangs?

Rare, indeed.

A million Fox Mustangs have gone bye-bye.

Funny thing is I remember purposely comparing how many '82-92 Camaro/ Firebirds were still on the road compared to the '79-93 Mustangs over 10 years ago. I never saw any Camaro or Firebirds around but a huge amount of fox body Stangs still prowling around. Present day you are right far less fox Stangs around but I still see them.

San Diego is good Fox country. I see a couple or more every time I'm out and about. One very nice convertible at the RaceLegal eighth-mile drags tonight at Qualcomm Stadium.

Look harder.

they're all over, even here in the NJ rust belt. My '86 Capri 5.0 stands testament. There are at least 3 other foxes in my neighborhood, all 5.0's Keep the body together and the motor will last forever if properly maintained.

I have 2 of them, 1980 Capri and '83 Mustang GT. Mine are basically the only 2 on the road in my whole county, since the stupid ass mini stock racers hoard them, bash the windows out, and put a 2.3 in them. This probably is their fate in many parts of the country. Tons of decent parts go in the dumpster. The rules favor 2.3 Ford motors, and they are considered native in any Fox Mustang. Front wheel drive is illegal, so let's grab all the Mustangs we can find.

The mini stockers have made Pintos and Mustang IIs extinct here. Fox Mustangs, almaost.

But the Camaros also seem extinct, just due to pure crappiness, and nobody wants them any more.

More and more strict smog laws have done their share in sending Fox's to the crapper.

Has everybody forgotten about the Mercury Zephyr and the Ford Fairmont? I have a 78 Mercury Zephyr Z7 that came with the factory 302. I suppose they can be considered a "grandma" type of car and are probably as aerodynamic as my garage, but the insurance on these cars is cheap and most parts interchange with the Mustang of that era. Plus, you can still get the

460 swap kit direct from Ford.

I also have a 76 Mustang II Cobra with the factory 302. I bought it in

1980, drove it awhile, then gave it to my nephew, who after a few years gave it to my niece and after a few more years, gave it back to me. I guess I should sell it, but it has a lot of memories...... But you're right. You don't see them on the streets anymore. Today's kids play Nintendo or "text" instead of getting their hands dirty working on their car. Too bad.

I never see them either. And they were considered uncool at the moment of their introdcution. Competition for the AMC Pacer? Definitely. Granny cars? definitely. I wouldn't own one, even now.

To each his own. However, I can tell you one thing. NOTHING makes a Camaro owner hurt more than when he gets beat by an old Grandma's car. These cars may be plain, but they are lightweight and the 460 engine fits inside with no cutting. Go a google search on Bob Glidden and see what he was racing back in '78 and '79. When you consider that these cars have no aerodynamic qualities, his record is simply amazing.

One of the all time ultimate sleepers. a little suspension, a blown 347 stroker.... you'll take out more than crapmaros and fireturds.

Yeah I know a guy that used to live in New Orleans who had a Fairmont Futura with a built 460. It was um, scary.

I'm in a semi-rural part of Ohio, and Yes, you don't see many 4s or 6s on a daily basis -- they got used-up providing the "sporty" everyday transportation they were designed for.

But let the sun shine a bit, and the V8s come out of the woodwork in droves......hatches as well as converts.

I had a couple Foxes: a 4 cyl hatch that gave me 90,000 trouble-free, comfortable miles. Then, a later V8 convert.......I should have kept it, but sold it to be ready for the new style which promised more interior room and a chassis designed from the start to be a convert. Pretty car, but no improvement over the old one......and the old one had an ashtray and you could read the gauges!

I think my 88LX 5.0 was more tossable then my 99 GT. And not as noisy. The 99 is way faster though.

I see several a day here in Reno. But, I drive all over town everyday for my job.

I've also noticed several on Craigslist for Reno, NV. That's where I bought mine (1989 GT). If you want, you can see it at

There was a whole bunch at the Fernley Speedway during Hot August Nights this year. It seemed like every other drag race had a fox body mustang with a turbo charger.

Nice looking car. I actually saw a 5.0 fox on the street today while pumping $60 of gas into my truck.
