help with my gt wheels

i have a 97 gt with the #17 stock wheels on it. here is my problem. the clear coat is peeling and there are places all around the outer rim due to tire weights being put on over the years and around the center caps. they are starting to look bad!! and i would like to restore them, and make them look new again. are there any way to get the clear coat off? and fix the small curves skuffs on the outer rim? these are the polished alum 5 lug wheels. any 1 here ever fix or know of anyone restoring these wheels. thanks for any info. mike p

I'm not sure about how to restore them, but once you do, when you have them balanced, ask for 'static' balance. They put the weights on the inside of the rim so they a) are not visible from the outside and b) don't scratch the rim edge. There is a disadvantage according to my tire guys. You don't get as good a balance as putting them on the outside and you may have to balance them a little more often. No problem for me as my tires came with lifetime rotation/balance. ;-)

I believe svtkate at one time posted something in here on how to restore wheels, you may want to check google's mewsarchive...

Hope this helps

I have never dealt with this company but there was a write up in the magazine Mustang Enthusiast. It might be worth a shot.

There are numerous companies that refinish aluminum wheels. Most insurance companies require refurbished wheels on accident damage. Transwheel is who I used to deal with in Chicagoland, I'd recommend calling a local body shop or two and ask who they use. Beforewarned, they will need your wheels for a few days or will swap them out with already refurbished wheels (if available). HTH, Sue

Most bodyshops can strip, polish and reapply the clearcoat in a few days.

From now on, don't let tire shops put weights on the outside edge. Most claim they cannot do a dynamic machine balance with the weights on the inside. This is a fantasy. I've insisted on this extra bit of 'service' for 25 years now, and I've never had a problem with it.
