how useful is that spoiler on my 96 GT vert?

OK... Today I backed into a tree and caused some damage to my rear spoiler. I noticed when I open my trunk there are two *visible* screws in the trunk lid that appear to be all that holds on the spoiler. Does anyone know if that is true? Next question: At what speeds do you think that spoiler is actually useful, if any? I'm really not tied to keeping that thing or replacing it. Finally, if I remove those screws and the spoiler, what do I do about the two holes? Ideas? Thanks!

The spoiler probably starts to offer it's benefits at speeds above 140 mph (it's window dressing, young fellow.... ). How on earth do you back into a tree??? Somebody sneeak up and put it there when you weren't looking?

Sarcasm aside.... why not check the wreckers for a replacement spoiler?

If I recall correctly, I think i read that on a Cobra it actually lost a couple MPH on the top end due to the spoiler. they took it off and gained 1 or 2 MPH. Google the archives.

Guess that explains why there isn't a spoiler on the M3. :)

I think so.

In access of any speed limit in this country and more then likely the maximum speed your car is capable of attaining, or you effectively driving at. Normally somewhere in the 120/140mph+ range.

Fill them in with bondo and paint the area. Should be about a $100 job at most body shops.

Cobra? Different Scott, I think. You wanted to see pics of my new interior, which I have not gotten yet but will!

I think it will be more trouble to fill the holes than it will to just hunt down another one.

How did you manage to damage the spoiler, and not the deck lid?

What color is your car?

Car is white. I backed into a parking spot where a tree trunk that curves hangs out. The curve is the reason why the spoiler was damaged but not anything else. To me this became an opportunity to get rid of the spoiler altogether. For me, it is an extra thing to scrub (and scrub under) when I wash the car. Yeah, some people think it looks cool and it definitely makes the car look sportier but what seals the deal for me is that the damn thing adds little or no *function* at the speeds I drive ( | Finally, if I remove those screws and the spoiler, what do I do about

I did not. It was gone already.

Ahh.. Ok. If you like it plain, then more power to ya.

Personally, I don't like the bare naked look. I don't care if it provides any other function than to look pretty, I won't leave home without it LOL

You MAY be able to find a deck lid, sans spoiler holes, in the right color if you look hard enough. Luckily your car is white, so it should be a relatively easy match.

altogether.

I'm with you, Scotter. I especially like the SN-95 body without the rear spoiler. Their already high tail-end makes a rear spoiler look like it's perched up too high.

Patrick '93 Cobra (wishing its spoiler was optional.)

Yeah when the dealer told me a new trunk lid, sans-spoiler was something like $750, I figured that was too expensive and even the other option of the cost of my time to find something used so I decided to just wait until Monday morning and go visit a body shop where they will fill in the holes.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Patrick! It gives ME more confidence in how my car will look without the spoiler. And I'm realizing two other things that appeal to me when I think about no-spoiler: (a) car becomes that much more of a "sleeper"; and (b) car becomes that much more unique/mine

Think USED parts Scott.... already painted, just take one off, put the other one on.
