I'm a Moron..I need Help

Hey Guys and Kate

So 'tis me again....and I have some all new problems for you guys to help me out with. The Engine is finally back in the car...(yeah ba-bay)...now....according to my "HOW TO REBUILD A 302" book.......I have done almost everything properly. If you are focusing on the word "ALMOST"....those of you who have read my past POSTS, you then know why. So then--first things first: the intake was sent out to get repaired for that damned "bolt breaking" weekend! I am still experiencing the midnight shakes and cold fevers from that one. The "dude" who fixed it did a bang up job...*TWO THUMBS UP*....it was a freaking riot when I brought it to him...he was in total "AWE" when I explained it to him...bottom line is...it costed me 100$ smackers to get it repaired.....BTW, that is in canadian funds, so that would be like 5.72$ American...(LOL)...but I'm sure I could have used the barter system and given him 3 beaver pelts and a flask of whiskey to call it even!

Okay, so now I have everyhting in the car..all lines hooked back up......new plugs, wires, cap ready for installation. My carb was rebuilt...(holly 600 CFM double "let me suck your paycheck out of you" pumper)....so according to my book...put No1 at TDC and then insert Distributor....Okie dokie!....oh wait...wouldn't this have been easier if my freaking rad and the sharp fan had not been installed..DOH!....turn - -OW my Knuckles - --turn - -OW my Knuckles......just breathe man...just breathe!...okay so she is at TDC...slide in distributor....hmmm..stops at the o-ring! okay...turn crank back a bit.....CLICK..there we go!....book didn't say SHIT about that......Common sense right!

Now put in plugs...(check gaps first)..they are good! Phew!....put on wires.....Hmmmm...what is the firing order....??? Let's see what Mr.Book has to say.....dum-de-dum....page...112......hmmm....okay found it........this looks good....oh wait..that's for a 351W ( so it says)....why would that be in there..if the book is for 302's...........weird! Oh well.......AW---now I see...the inner markings are for the 302....Phew that could have been a big boo-boo...okay--so now......all is good.......install battery.........dupe-de-doo....tzzz-tzzz!

Give car 2 pumps.....turn the key----chuga-chuga--chuga...VROOOOOM...SHE LIVES>>>SHE LIVES...clacka clacka POP...she died she died...............what the (*$*^(#^.....okay.................let's try that again..........turn the key----chuga-chuga--chuga...VROOOOOM...SHE LIVES>>>SHE LIVES...clacka clacka POP...she died she died...............what the (*$*^(#^.....okay---so I am guessing the firing order was wrong....I go back to the book........a diferent page has a different order.......okay--let's try that!

Give car 2 pumps.....turn the key----chuga-chuga--chuga...KA-FREAKING POW! Uh-oh--not good! turn key back..remove key---------------cry like baby! So I decide to go look on the internet.....punch up 1984 mustang firing order.....(using copernic)....BOOM..right on the page...is says..this is the firing order for all ford Mustangs from the years 1979-1993....okay cool....jot that down on a piece of paper....back to the garage.....redo the wires..........cross fingers.....scratch head...Hmmmmmmmm....why does this firing order not match the other two>>>...something fishy here!............ARGH...let's try it........chugga chugga...vroom...POP-POP-POPPOP...coming from the carb.....then the car dies.............

My question: is this a timing problem.....cuz I have not had a chance to time it yet.....the book says -10 degress could this cause the popping from the carb.................how can I time it if the car won't stay running!??? I am too stoopid to figure this out on my own!

I appreciate all the help I can get

Thanks Rick

Also what helps when setting timing is a 2nd person. Given that your firing order is correct, and that you're NOT 180 degrees off, have someone rotate the dist slightly left/right while you keep cranking the car. Preferably someone that has a little idea of why he's doing what he's doing. :) That way, you can quickly get the dist in a position where she'll keep running, then fine tune your timing to the proper degrees w/ a timing light.

remember just one backfire can blow a power valve in the carb if a powervalve protector was not installed.

remember you could be 180 deg off on you're distributer. good luck

I don't think the engine would sputter even for a second with the distributer off 180 degrees. The poster said it did sputter a little before stalling. This is consistant with the timing being off by 20 degrees or something.

Hey Rick, I don't have a clue what your problem is, but I sure had a good laugh reading your post. Felt like I was standing there watching you bust your knuckles.

My daughter Kristen read over my shoulder and offered these words of wisdom:, "It's because you're a guy, and the car must be female, she will give you as much trouble as she can, BECAUSE she can!" Pretty good logic, since trying to figure out how a woman is thinking has been the male dilemma for centuries!

Hope you get her goin soon!

Kate Kristen also ask... "What's her name?" meaning the car...
