do the replace anything or do you just put them in? i know they help you get more traction but how exactly does it help?

The control arm sets replace your existing control arms. They are not like bolt on wheel-hop or traction bars.
The new arms will likely have stronger bushings and different geometry (ie: length and bolt locations) that help prevent wheel hop and help plant the tires better to the ground.
