Intermittant CEL

Here's the latest CEL chain of events on my 96GT............

- CEL light on for awhile

- pull codes. code translates to bad O2 sensor (in front of cats)

- replace O2 sensors (I replaced both front banks while I was under there)

- disconnect battery for an hour.

- start car

- CEL not on. (that's good!!)

- drive 100 miles....CEL back on. (dammit!!)

- drive another 100 miles....CEL goes out (wtf??)

I would appreciate any replies as to what might be going on.

Thanks

Marc L.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but on the three vehicles I have changed O2 sensors on, I disconnected the battery before putting in the new ones. I can't see why it would make any difference. I am grabbing for straws here...trying to help you out in your time of need. Metaphorically speaking.

Disconnecting the battery clears the KAM (Keep Alive Memory). I've been told your supposed to do that any time you change an emissions related part.

Hope this helps.

thanks Don. The problem is i need to CA smog the car for registration. I can't roll into a smog station with a CEL.

Semi-OT: I was desperate a two years ago to smog the same car but had a CEL for an evap. canister. It was down to the last day for registration, so i parked a few blocks away, pulled off the battery connections for an hour to clear the CEL, passed smog with *flying* colors. Then on the way home the CEL went back on as usual.

I'm already late with the smog, so I'm going to do it right this time.

Maybe I should *re-boot* again. It wouldn't hurt

O2 sensor codes are amongst the most misunderstood codes there are.... post the codes and I'll put together a list of possibilities.

Check the codes again and post them here.

Thanks Jim

well, i don't have the codes. I took it to my trusted local shop and they scanned them (no charge....i might add).

He basically just told me which bank was bad and double-checked on their computer in the office.

BTW: I'm at another 100 miles and no CEL. For now I suppose I hope it just stays off. Either way, I'm getting 4-5 mpg more since I replaced the O2's.
