Internal Differential alignment issue?

A month or so ago I could hear a very slight noise (whine) from the differential. Sine the gears were replaced just under a year ago I took it back into the shop and they confirmed the noise. (Chipped pinion gear). Now, three gear sets later the noise right from get go is worse. The shop says the pattern is good and everything appears OK. They accept that there might have been one bad gear set but not three so they are looking for another cause. They seem to recall an article dealing with an internal alignment issue and want to research this before popping in another gear set. (This is costing them nothing but money now).

My question, have any of you ever experienced such an event and if so what was the cure.

Richard,

Did you actually see the pattern? Get any rear wheel drive Ford shop manual, make a copy of the patterns. Take it to the shop and make them show you the pattern. A heck of a lot of shops do rear end work that have no clue how to set up a ring and pinion.

I've been through it a number of times with my own cars. I remember my first, it was a neighborhood repair shop and the guy was telling me how great he was. That AH couldn't tie his shoes let alone set up a rear end. He ruined two of my ring and pinion sets before I had the sense to go to a different shop.

Then I decided I could bo it myself. After about six failures I bought a pinion depth mic and made some case spreaders. Took a while but I taught myself how to do it.

BTW: I had the local Chevy dealer do a 12 bolt Chevy in late 67, it came out

100%. The 12 bolt and the Ford 8.8 are about as close as anyone can copy something. I would assume a Ford dealer would have the right tools and the right technicians to do a good job.

Ain't that the truth!! I found out the hard way with a RWD Chrysler that had the rear end rebuilt by a so called "professional". He didn't pre-load the pinion properly and left out the thrust washers for the spider gears. It lasted about 3000 easy miles before it blew apart on the interstate. I'll never forget that horrible sound :(
