Just bought a 93 Mustang with one - the conical ones inside the engine bay. Looks bigtime dirty. How do I clean it?
Also, the doors squeek something fierce. A little silicon lube does the trick but once it drips off, it's back. Grease would work better I assume. Question though, what causes this? Can it be fixed?
Lastly, I have some of the weirdest lights in the engine bay under the rad. Two of them, both red, point up about 45 degrees. They don't seem to be hooked up - I can't light them. WTH are these? Better yet, who would do this? lol
Actually there is a "recharge kit" from K&N, cleaner and oil. IMHO an open filter in the engine bay is not a good setup. Draws nothing but hot air. I would suggest that you relocate it in the fender well.
You might try a spray can of white grease. Works well for me.
This was debunked by our longtime former resident David Lyons who measured the under hood air temp in his Grand National and found that as soon as you hit 3 MPH or so the temp drops.
. they tend to get gaps in the filter material (have one on my 93) check it closely if you can see daylight through it, best to just replace it, they are not that expensive.
You should get a cold air tube and run it to the wheel well, hot air in engine bay. Even going back to Stock filter is better than conical under the hood, stock draws from cooler wheel well air. The kits are out there
you probably need to get the doors repinned/rehung. check the bottom hinge the pin may be up, and the brass fitting between the pin and hole is probably warn out, so steel is on steel and squeeks even when oiled,. not an easy job take off door hold it just right, etc 2 man job min, cut top pin etc. There are two pins per door, four brass fittings per door, I getting mine rehung currently. there is also a center tab that breaks off on the top door hinge, it kept the door from swing wide open, both broke off on mine.
sound like extra crap. see if the hook into the wiring harness, but I never heard of them, on a 5.0, dont know about cobra - fog light leftovers?? Some guys in the old days would put lights behind the rad and it could look cool to someone in front at night, but that is old school, late 50's.
you can check the motor mounts by seeing if the fan blade is hitting the bottom of the cowling. but if you had a rebuild engine they would have put in new. a muffler shop will fix your pipes, I like stock for now. Getting my 93 painted in a few weeks, with the good paint, (it was a dps car, they shot it with cheap paint) has an 8# blower on it and a tune, new rebuilt engine with a little lower compression, nice summer tires, nice and soft hook up well, drive it in town. Get offers to buy it about once a month, a paper under the windshield wiper. Too much Fun!
Thanks everyone for your answers. I really appreciate the help. :)
Faster eh? Gotta say, I'm a little cocky lately with my new car - 93 Cobra warmed over with 3.08s. lol. Out today I spun the tires wildly during the
1-2 shift at WOT... I stayed on the throttle and spun them right through 2nd to 6,000 as the ass started to slide out to the right - put it in 3rd to get it straight. It's insane this car. I love it!!! lol Can't wait to see what it runs at the track. Too much fun indeed!!! :)
Open and under hood are two different things, but it looks like they mean both. I've never made any tests myself, all I know on the subject at this point is what Davis Lyons wrote on his experiment. I'd say the numbers are correct in that PDF, but other than that I don't know. Maybe someone should try it on a Mustang.
