Need good input on this engine setup

Was hoping you all could help me out. I just pulled the old, leaking, .060 overbore 289, & the messed up C4 from my 1967 Mustang. Need to know if this plan will work well. I'll be picking up the parts over the weekend.

I can't find a good complete HO 5.0 engine and the budget's real limited (I'm an intern) so this is my plan to get my mustang back on the road as my nice daily driver:

  1. Pick up a non-HO 5.0 engine from the junkyard (just saw a clean looking one in an '87 Cougar XR-7) about 0.
  2. Put in an HO camshaft
  3. Slap on my 289 heads if I can't find any E7TE-AA or '69-'74 351W heads.
  4. Throw on the Edelbrock Performer intake & 600cfm carb I have on the 289.

So will this setup work as well as an HO 5.0? Will I need to buy the A/C unit to use the serpentine belt? Will it get the 225HP? It's my daily driver but I want to be able to spin the wheels every now 'n then like I can with my old 289. I got the inspiration from this site:

obviously I won't be using fuel injection. Lastly I'll install the T-5 I picked up from an '84 5.0 Capri.

I dunno nearly enough about engines to tell if you if that'd work or not, but damn it sounds like a load of fun & an even bigger load of cussing. Please keep us informed of what you're doing... I would absolutely love to see the final product.

I've been doing the same thing. It can be done. I've snatched up several unwanted Crown Vics for the 5.0 and AOD trans. Have the combo running in a 70 Maverick now. As you know 86 and up 5.0s have hyd roller cams, this is the block you want. Along with the mentioned E7T heads if you find a pair. The E6S heads are junk. Beware of the stock flat top pistons in these engines with no valve reliefs that won't let you cam. Rebore for good pistons. This engine works well with EDL intakes and carbs. I run a custom grind from Comp. You can use an iron dist. gear with their cams unlike the stock roller cam which requires a steel gear. The A/C and front accessory area is the trickiest. The front harmonic balancer is a 4 bolt piece, not unlike the 70 and up 302s The 3 bolt 289 pulley, water pump and alt. mount won't work. I use a typical 1970 style arangement. It's cleaner than the serpentine. There's more to it than swapping the oil pan. Don't want to write a book here...

Too much for a run out 5.0.

And the timing cover needs to be swapped to run a mech. fuel pump....

good luck.

Why not just find a decent 302? There's alot of them out there and are cheap...real cheap. Best thing is that you can quickly get it going with your 289 stuff and upgrade to whatever you want it to be, as you get more funds.
