hello all... I've jumped into a pile of crap and didn't really notice it. I'm having a hell of a time getting my timing belt lined up. I'm working on a 84 300 z, dual overhead cam, turbo. The belt jumped and caused a no start. Teeth were broken from the worn timing belt. Removed all accessories and belts, gained acess to the timing belt. Of course the cams and crank weren't in the correct timing because of the belt being broken/worn. Read the Haynes manual, it says the timing marks for the cams are punch marks on the cam gears itself and two more punch marks on the timing belt backing plate. For the crank, a punch mark on the gear and a notch on the oil housing. I've completed all that. All marks are where they should be. All the gears are lined up. Now it's time for my problem. After installation of timing belt, I have to use a feeler gauge to set the tension on the tensioner. (i don't have a feeler gauge) so I used cardboard of simiular thickness. Then I rotate the motor twice by hand. then set back to TDC and check my marks. After several installations I'm still haveing the same problem. the marks on the left cam and the mark on the crank match....but the mark on the right side cam is off by one tooth. can anyone shed some light? thanks eric.
