03 sentra specV MAF

I had a check engine light appear last Wed.,motor barely ran, would not rev,("limp-home" mode) and the P0102 code indicated the MAF was bad. I checked online, and a Nissan site wanted almost $400 for the whole assembly. Advance Auto (and the usual others)wanted about $300 for the assembly, nobody seemed to sell the MAF sensor itself. Looking further,I found a sensor at Car-stuff.com for $78,and with shipping, total of $89. The sensor was for a 00-01 Maxima(3.0L),but the part number matched the first part of the one on my MAF assembly(and the online pic looked the same). So,I took a chance and ordered it.It arrived today, and was exactly like my OEM unit. Installed it today, and the car again ran fine. Man,I feel GREAT about saving so much money!

These dealers and (most)parts places are ripping us off by not selling the sensor by itself.

BTW,"limp-home mode" is a misnomer;the car would not run enough to get anywhere.I was lucky it crapped out in my parking lot and not on the road.

Update;I took apart the old sensor, and inside, there's a ceramic hybrid substrate with a large integrated circuit (bare chip,or "chip-on- board")that processes the signal from the actual metal film sensor that is on the tip that sticks out into the airflow.

the hybrid circuit is potted in clear silicone rubber, but it doesn't look like anything burned or arced. I presume that some spike or surge killed the IC,causing the failure.

It's looking like the same sensor is used in several models of Nissan(Maxima 3L,Altima 2.5/3.5L,and Sentra 2.5L),and the difference is in the housing it gets screwed into, the airflow tube. One probably only needs the sensor with the right pinout, either 4-pin,5- pin,or 6-pin.

Again,a RIPOFF that the parts place only sell a "remanufactured assembly" and not the sensor -without- housing.(and jacking up the price...)

I looked around tonight and found the same part on several parts sites. It turns out there's more than one part number for the same item, and it fits Infiniti G20,I30,Maxima,Sentra,Altima and Subaru Legacy.Price is about the same on all of the sites. That's for the sensor *w/o housing*.I suspect different models/brands use different housings.

also,my part shipped from "Fulfillment Warehouse",Chesapeake,VA;must be some sort of parts warehouse or depot that supplies several online parts sources. Other online parts sources I've used also shipped from a different-named warehouse.

thanks for the heads-up on car-stuff.com! I've used RockAuto with good results.
