You would think so! However, they still do it to this day - even on the new Frontiers with the VG33 engines. Fortunately, the rest of the vehicle is pretty much bulletproof, so I can't complain too much.

I hear ya. Hopefully, the new Frontier with the VQ 4.0l won't do it!

I had the exact same problem- could have sworn it was the valves. It was the exhaust manifold issue (92 Pathfinder, 90k miles).
Here is the obvious lesson- there are two exhaust gasgets that need replacement (right and left). I did just the right, then the left went out about 3 months later. Cost per side assuming just the gasget, studs and labor was $550.
I can do the work myself. I just get frustrated when I change a perfectly good part, and the problem is still there... :)
