92 PF SE - Tire Carrier bushings?

Sep 19, 2003 1 Replies

Anyone have any knowledge about replacing the bushings for the two pins that hold the tire carrier on a 92 Pathfinder SE?

The dealership indicates the process is to:

- grind off one of the heads on the existing 'rivets'

- punch out the 'rivet pins'

- press out the bushings in the two 'yokes' on the tire carrier ends

- press in new bushings I don't know if they then use a removable type of pin as the replacement to reattach the carrier.

The problem is that the carrier, at the upper hinge, is now loose, and makes noise when going over bumps.

We had this done by a dealer a few years ago, on our '91 Pathfinder. It, too, rattled after the repair. The problem was that the new bushings held the carrier more level, holding the latch end of the carrier above the bump pad, which was by then worn, leaving a gap against which the carrier rattled. It went away as the carrier's weight settled it onto the bump pad.

You could check this by stuffing something into the contact area.
