or do I need to buy a whole lower control arm?
Don't wanna spend too much. It should be possible to remove the control arms and have a machine shop press new ball joints in, shouldn't it?

Yes the ball joints can be separated and replaced by a machine shop. You can re-use the control arm but you may want to replace the bushings while you are at it. I was able to get the ball joints from (spoke to Greg Vogel) though they were NAPAbrand as Nissan does not sell them…
