Help Needed, Unusual Tachometer problem

The tachometer on my 95 Nissan 200SX does not respond to engine revolutions anymore. At idle the needle starts out at about 1000 rpm and then drifts upward slowly until it pegs past the 9000 RPM mark. When I turn the ignition key off, the needle will sometimes jump back to zero and at other times it will stay pegged past the 9000 rpm mark.

I have pulled the instrument cluster and the connections look secure.

A new tachometer is about $70.00 so I thought I would check with the group before spending the money.

Thanks in advance for your help

Bill

PS I have noticed it will work normally for a few seconds after starting the engine on very cold days (-20F ) in the Winter.

First thing to check is for a grounding problem. Just because the connections "look" OK, is not enough; Uncouple each connection and brush with a wire brush or such, to remove oxidation, then re-attach. Worse case could be internal degradation or component problems inside tach.

I don't know where the sensing element on this model is. All connections between sensor and tach need to be cleaned, including earth (that includes connections which are not easily seen but that are shown on the wiring schematic for that model). It's rare, but even the connection at wires which are crimped at a connector could be suspect to oxidation (a re-crimping normally solves this). Remember, if all connections are clean and all continuity is confirmed, then suspect the tach. If you have access to a pulse counter, you can check the input to the tach.
