Sentra A/C Clutch

The Clutch on my 92 SE-R is very noisy. Probably the bearings going. Once the A/C compressor is engaged it quiets down. Can I change the clutch myself. I know sometimes they are pressed on and are a hassle to change but if it is just a matter of unbolting it I would like to try and change it and not have to buy a whole compressor. Thanks for the replies.

Don't have any first-hand knowledge of that unit... but normally a puller is required for that job.

Interesting. The bearing works both when the compressor is on and off. What kind of noise is it? Grinding, squeal?

What happens when you remove the belt and spin the pulley by itself? Does it show excesive play?

Most recent cases I dealt with, I was able to remove the clutch plate without the need for special tools.

Removing the pulley can be a PITA in particular, if the bearing center race has spun on the compressor housing. You will need a special socket to remove the lock nut and/or snap ring tool for this one depending on the compressor fitted in your car.

Good luck!

What I am finding is if the clutch is spinning and engaged with the compressor then it is (was) much quieter. I figured that there must be some rotating part of the clutch that isn't free spinning when it engages the compressor. Once the compresser is engaged the screeching noise stops. Now what I have noticed is the noise is much worse and he clutch is partly engiging the compresser all the time (compressor turning but much slower than the clutch). Even when the switch is off. The noise, screeching, has gotten much worse. I have decided to stop driving it and replace the compressor tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply.
