Xtrail Heater

My 2006 Xtrail has developed a heater problem. The rotary heater temperature control normally moves, from a neutral position, half a turn counterclockwise for cold and half a turn clockwise for hot. Suddenly it feels as though it is spring loaded towards the cold position. If you force it towards the hot position it springs back to neutral again. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and if it is a big job to fix it.

What market X-trail is this?

All the european ones have a rotatry heat knob that goes from roughtly a 7 o'clock position (18 deg c) to a 5 o'clock position (30 deg c) - no spring or neutral position.

Mine is Canadian. Your description sounds the same as mine. Before this problem occurred, there was no feeling of a spring in mine at all.

Sounds almost as if the dial has come loose from the dash and the whole thing is just turning left or right in its mounting hole. Maybe the springing is due to the wires wanting to return to their natural position?

It may be connected to a cable (like a lawn mower throttle) and that's what's springy. It may control a blend door that's stuck for some reason. I've never been in an Xtrail, so this is based on general experience.
