2001 rattling and lock issues

Hi All,

Having a little trouble with a 2001 Altima and wondering if anyone has any answers. Two things. First is a rattling noise which happens whenever the car hits a bump. Its appears to be coming from the rear of the car and could possibly be from the exhaust hanger bolts being loose? Its hard to duplicate the noise but I hear cabs making it all the time.

Second issue has to do with the locks. When I get out of the car, close the doors, and attempt to hit the lock button on the keychain remote, it won't lock. If i keep hitting the lock button it will eventually work. Batteries are fine and I am right next to the car. Sometimes it seems to coincide with the engine fan turning off. Almost like it is waiting for the car to "cool down" before allowing the remote lock function to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2000-2001 ALTIMA REMOTES DO NOT WORK DURING RADIATOR COOLING FAN OPERATION

APPLIED VEHICLES:

2000-2001 Altima (L30)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If the multi remote controller (key fob)

^ does not lock or unlock the doors or

^ has reduced range or

^ operates intermittently

when the radiator fans are operating after turning the engine off, the cause may be electrical noise. Such "noise" can be caused by operation of the radiator cooling tans and could affect the range of the remote controllers under some circumstances.

Should this condition occur, use the service procedure in this bulletin to confirm the condition exists and install the sub-harnesses listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin to resolve the incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Confirmation Test:

  1. Turn the radiator cooling fans "ON" "LOW" using CONSULT-II:

^ Connect CONSULT-II to the vehicle.

^ Turn the ignition switch "ON".

^ Press "START" and select "ENGINE".

^ Press "ACTIVE TEST".

^ Press "COOLING FAN".

^ Press "START".

^ Select "LOW" speed.

NOTE :To prevent the possibility of electrical interference with the Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU), roll the front window on the driver's side part way down, exit the vehicle, feed the CONSULT-II unit through the open window, and place the unit on the vehicle's roof.

CAUTION :To avoid damaging the vehicle's paint, place a clean, soft fender cover or equivalent material under the CONSULT-II unit before placing it on the roof. Take care not to let the CONSULT-II unit fall from the roof of the vehicle.

  1. Walk 20 feet from the back of the vehicle and press the remote lock and unlock buttons.

  1. Confirm the remote will not lock or unlock the doors by verifying the hazard lights do not flash twice.

  2. Turn the cooling fans "OFF" using CONSULT-II.

  1. Turn CONSULT-II and the vehicle's ignition switch "OFF".

  2. Proceed to the Repair Procedure, below.

Repair Procedure:

  1. Disconnect the engine room harness connector from radiator cooling fan connectors E8 and E9 (see Figure 1).

  1. Install one sub-harness between the engine room harness connector and cooling fan connector E8 (see Figure 1).

  2. Install a second sub-harness between the engine room harness connector and cooling fan connector E9 (see Figure 1).

NOTE :During installation steps 2 and 3 above, securely engage and lock cooling fan connectors E8 and E9 to the engine room harness and new sub-harness connectors. Failure to do so may cause the ECM to display diagnostic trouble codes.

  1. Test that the remote door lock/unlock functions properly by repeating the Confirmation Test (the hazard lights should flash twice when the lock/unlock buttons are pushed).

NOTE :Ensure the following steps are taken when repeating the Confirmation Test:

^ Check both "HIGH" and "LOW" fan speeds.

^ Confirm both cooling fans are working by opening the hood and visually verifying their operation.

^ Make sure CONSULT-II is placed on the vehicle's roof during testing to prevent the possibility of electrical interference with the Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU).

CAUTION : To avoid damaging the vehicle's paint, place a clean, soft fender cover or equivalent material under the CONSULT-II unit before placing it on the roof. Take care not to let the CONSULT-II unit fall from the roof of the vehicle.

When I got my 2001 altima in March 2001, about 3 months later the same thing happened to me. I took it to the Dealer who told me that Altima's were having a problem where by the rubber "thing" around the bar that connects the two back tires was falling off. The piece was back ordered and I had to wait 1 week for the "rubber thing" to come in. Since they fixed it, I had no problems.

On issue 2, my altima does the same thing "occasionally". When you exit and the radiator fan is going the "lock all doors" on the key chain does not work. Wait for about 5 seconds and it works. I will tell the dealer the next time.
