CVT technology is decades old, but has never been mass-scale commercially viable until just a couple years ago. Because of the reduction in number of moving parts CVT transmission have generally had more long-term durability than typical transmissions. So far, the reliability of the Altima, and other

2007 Nissan products, has been very good. To get a better gauge of long-term viability of CVT vehicles look at their quality record in Japan, which is excellent, where they have been produced for several years and are subjected to much more stop-and-go driving.
