2000 Max Mileage Gone Kaput

Aug 21, 2005 7 Replies

I thought that my wifes 2000 Max was not running nearly as fast as my

2000 Max. I put her mass air flow sensor in my car and mine would hardly run. After a while, the computer must have corrected for the different MAF as it began to run just OK.

I put a new MAF in her car and now it runs like a streak. I put mine back in my car (it had been replaced about a year ago) and it, too, runs like a streak...but...the mileage has gone down the tubes.

Where I used to get 23-24 average combined around town, now I only get

  1. Is there a way to reset the computer so that it will re-learn the new MAF and get my mileage back??

Any knowledge would be much appreciated.

try disconnecting the negative side of the battery, hit the brake pedal for a coupla seconds, wait 15-30 minutes or so, reconnect.

You might need to reload any radio station presets - so write 'em down before you do this if it's important to you.

You might expect poor starting/running conditions for a few drive cycles.

What does a new MAF cost and is it easy to put in? Where is it. Thanks, Ed

You probably will need to hook it up to a scanner to clear the "learned" memory. Disconecting the battery doesn't work anymore. I'd expect with some time it will reset it self to the original MAF.

The MAF sensor is right behind the air filter. I removed the air filter assembly (5 bolts and one clamp) then removed the MAF. You have to disconnect one electrical connector on the MAF.

You can get a new Nissan MAF for the 2000 Max for $89.95 at Coutresy Nissan here in Richardson, TX. The URL is:

Thanks for the info. Do you think a bad MAF could be causing ping? I've also been told to get the cylinders cleaned. Ed

My Max was pinging so badly I thought it had jumped time. They told me that I needed my EGR system cleaned. I said "yeah, sure". When I got it back, it wouldn't even run. That's when I replaced the MAF. Since then, it's been great.

I don't know if the EGR cleaning did anything. ======================

I replaced the MAF on my 2000 Max. Unhooked the battery overnight and after two tanks of regular gas, no pinging, smooth acceleration. I'm happy, even at $4/gallon. ed
