96 maxima air conditioning problem

Hi Folks,

I have a 96 Maxima SE with 130,000 miles. Last summer I noticed the air-conditioning wasn't very cold. It continued to blow warmer and finally blew hot air. I took it in, they said I had a small leak (after recahrging it and putting a blue liquid in). I got it back and it blew cool air. They told me that it blows the normal 55 degrees that it is supposed to. I went to two other dealers who said the same thing. They have recharged it but it never blows cold. My wife's Pathfinder gets cold. I would love to keep the car, the engine is wonderful. I just don't want to sweat all summer. Any advice???

Looking at the table for the '96 i30 (which should be the same), the temperature coming out the center vent depends on the ambient temperature and relative humidity. 55 degrees (assuming Fahrenheit) is in the range of acceptable outlet temperatures only if the temperature of the air going into the recirculate air intake is 95 degrees at 50-60 percent relative humidity. As the temperature and humidity going in goes lower, the temperature coming out should also be lower, down to 35-37 degrees when the intake temperature is 66.

I think either your compressor is toast, or, more likely, the system is probably overcharged. Did your mileage drop after the recharge? - that is a symptom that the system is overcharged. Make them actually put the gauges on it and check the pressures besides the temperature coming out.
