Dead Battery - caution - 5th gen SE

My lock button on the key fob is often depressed while in my pocket when I'm working around the house and I'll hear a beep-beep. No big deal. HOWEVER, for the first time in 3 yrs, the trunk release button was accidentally depressed the same way. Due to the severe winter here, I was driving my Jeep all week. The trunk light comes on when the lid is released, and was on for several days. The battery was as dead as it could get when I found out. The trunk should have a mercury type switch so that it has to be actually lifted to allow the light to go on. Or the trunk light should be in the circuit with the map and courtesy lights to go out after 30 min. Luckily it was in my garage. I could imagine that some owners parked in the street have found their trunk released from time to time (and maybe emptied, depending on the neighborhood).

My windows are not controlled by this fob in my 2001. As for taking the batt out, if you are not using it, it would be easier to take the thing off my keyring, but it is in use (except for several cold days). I had a ford that I wanted to disable the panic alarm (too easy to activate on that car) and it was easy to place a small piece of tape over the appropriate contacts inside the fob, but Nissan fobs do not have accessible contacts. It's just not a good idea to have the release that accessible. Perhaps there should be a 2 sec hold down or using two buttons to unlock the trunk. I also use a larger that stock bulb in my trunk. That drains the batt quicker. The original was made for an ash tray!

You really think they can use mercury anymore? :-)

And that would just be one more part to break which then someone else would bitch about them making it overly complex! The solution it to figure out why you keep pressing those buttons as someone else pointed out, it can also roll down the windows etc.

I'd think you could naybe figure out a way not to be pressing those buttons all the time? Like putting the key fob in your other pocket instead of thinking this is a defect with the car.
