Nissan maxima 91 , studs and manifold

Hi all,

I am in a quite nice situation. To make the story short, a friend of mine just got a maxima 91, at a very good price (his brother is a car rep). He is just going to keep it until December: he got a new job, had to give back the compagny car, but he'll get another one in December.

I have a 92 passat, 270,000km, which still runs fine. He offered to me to buy his maxima in December, probably at the same price (3000$can, while listed at 5000$ as it has only 88,000 km on it (certified)). It's fully equipped (leather, etc). I am not sure if it's a SE or GXE yet.

I don't drive a lot of km per year (5000km). I was thinking of keeping the vw, but this seems like quite a deal.

The vw is 4x4, supercharged, also fully equipped, in nice shape, mechanically very well maintained. I think I could get around 3000$ for it. If it breaks down, some parts can be very expensive.

So it seems I should go for it. Nice thing is I have plenty of time ahead of me to decide.

My question is: I had a 93 Villager (Quest) with the manifold/broken stud exhaust pb. Which I sold because of that. it was estimated at

4000$can to fix it (by Ford), and 1800$can by a Midas garage (a king of 94 conversion I was told). I read that maximas could also be plaggued by this. What's you input on this? Is that very frequent, almost sure? I think it happens at 150000km and over, it happened to me at 200000km). Are there some year/model that are more concerned about that? What is the cost for the maxima?

Anything else I should worry? Raoul

First, a decision the buy the 1991 maxima at about 3k would be a steal and a very wise decision. They have low maintenance, very reliable, very comfortable and with about 160 horsepower you have loads of power.

As for you question about the manifold studs, the answer is YES and a big YES. The years 89-94 are very famous for rusty manifold studs and they very often crack off into the head. I have a 1990 Nissan Maxima in which I went to replace the manifold gasket and of course removing those studs was a nightmare. Two crack off into the motor. I am located in Newfoundland Canada and the labour rate around here is very reasonable. I paid only $200.00 to have the complete job done. So it don't appear to be an expensive job. Brakes will run about $60 bucks each for rotors front and back. Pads about

30-40 bucks.

Villager = Quest = Maxima engine, so you already have Maxima experience! Check underbody and lower fender panels carefully for rust. The 91 Max is 3rd Gen, likely the best overall ever made. Try these sites for issues, DIY tips, model ID, and much more info:
