306 starting problems.

One thing springs to mind. The engine speed sensor. It is susceptible to water entry on the connector, usually from a slight water leak from the themostat housing just above it. But it could be any number of things. Really needs to be put on a diag machine to find out.

Is it necessary to remove air filter box to reach this sensor ?

And who knows how to remove the "coil" the thing betwwen the two camshaft and above the spark plugs ?

And yes, there is a small leak from the thermostat housing.

It would certainly help to remove the airbox. The coil pack is held on with six 5mm allen bolts. Five of them you can use an allen key socket, but the one under the brake master cylinder needs an ordinary bent allen key. Once removed, and the electrical connector, just lift off, squeezing it past the master cylinder. It's tight but it will come off.

I have not been able to locate the engine speed sensor ... I have seen the 3 wire brown plug, but not the sensor itself. I think it is hidden under pipes. Removing the air box does not help.

The 3 sensors on the thermostat are coolant temp, coolant warning light and fan control ? (nb the car has climatisor).

Yeah it isn't easy to get to. It is held on by a bolt--10mm I think-- which you more or less have to find and undo by feel. It's right at the top where the gearbox meets the engine, directly under the water housing.

About the sensors. The blue one does the gauge and light, the brown one does the fans and the green one tells the ECU what the temp is.

Will retry to see something with a smaller mirror. The one I tried to use was too big. I prefer to see something before trying with a wrench ...

The other problems I had with this car where: About 2 years ago, the engine quit on the motorway. Hopefully, it was just before an exit. The car stopped, the engine shut down. I waited some minutes, trying to look what to do in the manual. Then I restarted the engine. And it started as if nothing had happened. The car went next week to peugeot dealer, who found nothing.

And from time to time, the engine does not start as usual. It starts, but it seems to rattle on three cylinder only at idle. Just accelerate one or two time up to 2000 rpm, and the ratttling is gone. No orange light lit. The dealer still found nothing.

And last monday, the car simply refused to start. Not even a single fire. I controlled what I could with a digital multimeter. Nothing special. Still not a fire for 2 days. I tried to start it at least 10 - 20 times.

And yesterday, trying still to look at the car, I tried to start it, And surprise, it had some sparks. I insisted on the starter, say 5 -10 seconds. And then it started. And then I started it 4 or 5 times without a glitch or any rattling.

But I cannot go anywhere with an unreliable car.

That's where I am now.

NB: Can I mesure the resistance of the coil pack and what should I read ? from the side connector, pin 1-3 should give the resistance of the first primary coil, 3-4, the second primary coil. and from the spark plugs end, 1-4 should give me first secondary coil , and 2-3 the second secondary ?

Also, what can I check with an ohmmeter on the cranksaft sensor ?
