I did it!!!!!!! hahahahahaha

Just finished fitting an axle from a 1.9gti 205 onto my standard

205!!!! I get slight lockup under extreme braking but the compensators work well otherwise. With larger front brakes it?ll probably stop. I have to say that Koni yellows rule, and I got them free with the axle!!!

During this project I found out that araldite steel and precision are both brake fluid resistant, and that the GTi axle is wider to accomodate alloys.

Well pleased with myself, cos I?ve had no mechanical training and it all works!!!!! except the weights on the inside of the wheels clip the brake pads :( but thats hardly a problem as they?ve just ground down upon hitting them :D

Just driven round to break everything in. The konis make it a bumpy ride at low speeds :( , but more smooth than I?m used to at high speeds :)

Also rear discs do improve braking despite the fact that I?ve been told they don?t. Plus the car pitches forwards less under braking :D

Sounds like the rear brakes are doing more stopping work than they should. Either get the compensator fixed/adjusted, or get those front brakes done, the last thing you want in an emergency is the backs locking up and sending you into a spin.

You need to get that sorted ASAP.

The rear discs should NOT improve your braking - if they do, then your bias is set too far rearward.

Get it adjusted before you crash and die.

i take it you fitted the inline compensators with the axle i'm more worried about what you used the araldite for

Thankfully they only do it just before the front wheels lock, so it?s ignorable for now. Who would know how to adjust them? Most garages I asked didn?t even know what they were! Even Peugeot weren?t too sure about them. I intend to get bigger front brakes in a month or two anyway, whenever I?ve got the money and time.

peugeot should know its part of a recall at one time on 306 where you check the front and rear brake pressures and adjust the rear compensator the equipment used was designed for the 405 abs systems and was mandatory equipment at the time so you are looking for a peugeot dealership of a few years experience

Ignore the araldite, I was just experimenting. My cars booked in for a service in a couple of days so any problems will be picked up then. Yes the compensators are fitted and you need very heavy braking to lock the rear wheels, and the front lock at the same time. The discs don?t give a huge amount to the braking, but it is noticable (but then I notice if there?s an ounce extra weight in the car). When I was trying to find out about the compensators I came across quite a few GTi owners who didn?t bother with them at all!

Besides it?s safer than when I first got the car when half the disc surface was heavily rusted, and it still past it?s mot.

Just to put everyones minds at rest. Now that the pads have worn in the rear wheels don?t lock. I?ve also had it checked by a Peugeot specialist who says it?s all working fine.
