Peugeot 306 1.4 idling/stalling

Hi, I own an X reg (2000) Peugeot 306 1.4 (injection not carb) which has recently developed a problem with idling. When I first start the car it will not idle it just cuts out and when I come to a stop whilst driving it also stalls. It does this until the engine is warm and then it idles very low and occasionally will still cut out. But sometimes it will idle very low with the engine still cold! I cleaned the stepper motor (as suggested on other posts) and this seemed to make a slight difference howver the problem was still there, so I brought a new stepper motor (=A395) and fitted it and the problem is still there........DOH!

Any ideas what might be causing this, I have read somewhere that it may be worth cleaning the air intake valve - is this correct?

Please don't tell me that it might be the ECU as I might cry as they look expensive!!=20

Many Thanks

Paul

Thanks for that, although that page is linked to the 206, I take it that the problem may also been relevant to the 306. Not sure if this is relevant but the problem only came on after I had the middle box of my exhaust and catalytic converter replaced? Would something like that cause these probs in any way??

Many Thanks

Paul,

my 306 S reg went the same way recently. Cleaned/Replaced Stepper Motor - fault still persisted. Sent ECU to Avilec in Southampton where they test your ECU for £30. My turned out to be faulty, so got a cheap re-conditioned unit from them which cured the problem. Had to replace the coil pack first though.

Cheers, Tim.

I don't know if your car has one but this sounds like the lambda sensor, which I believe is fitted near the cat to monitor the emisions. A peugeot garage or specialist will be able to test this sensor for you via the diagnostic port on your ECU.
