Peugeot 309 1.4 ltr. Graffic 1990 model. Timing belt renewal

Hi again,

Maybe the 1.4 has got a chain instead of a belt. If so, I've read that a chain will last forever too. Is this true with the Peugeot 309?

A guy told me that the 309 has got a weak rear axle which sometimes break. Does this happen with a lot of cars?

I presume this is the TU petrol engine? In which case, yes it does have a timing belt, and should be changed every 72,000 miles (120,000 kms) or every 5 years whichever comes first

Yes it has the TU3 engine. I'm the third owner. The first owner had it on service at 72,000 km then he sold it. The second owner didn't do anything regarding service. It has now run 144,000 km and I assume it's long overdue for change of the timing belt. I will not drive it until I've changed it. Thanks for your reply.

I do not think the second owner had someone to change the timing belt, she was herself a old lady and when I bought it it was short of 1,5 liters of oil... Thats why I do not think the belt was changed at 120,000.

The first owner had it on several services. (last at 72,000) He owned the car for 8-9 years. Maybe he changed the belt, but hard to tell cause the service manual doesn't specify what's done.

I've got the Haynes repair manual to help me. Even got 2 of the same book so I'm very well prepeared... ;)

I hope I've not destroyed to catalysator. The engine has had some problems with either the spark plugs or condens in the petrol. I read today that the catalysator is very fragile. If unburned fuel enter it it, it most likely will be destroyed. If it has a catalysator... It's a

And the Haynes book did mention the 1.4 1368ccm engine afterall. In the end of the book. The TU3 is an OHC engine. I would much rather have had the engine with a chain I think...
