Rattling noise at 1800RPM....? Baaaaaad Fuel Economy

Hi all,

I've recently got a 1998 R Peugeot 306 and I've noticed a rattling sound when I rev the engine (either cold or hot/stationary or moving). It typically happens around 1800 RPM and sounds like something is knocking.

Some people have diagnosed the problem as either, - Big end bearings - Crank pulley - Heat shield (Pug dealer mechanic)

I know for a fact that the problem isnt the heat shield, simply because I ran the engine without it attached and it was still doing the same thing.

I ran the engine whilst underneath the car to look for obvious vibrating objects, such as the exaust - but there was no movement whatsoever.

ALSO, I have noticed bad fuel economy on the vehicle, I recently drove from Glasgow to Manchester and I filled the tank before starting, then when I got here I filled the tank again. I worked out the amount of litres of fuel used combined with distance to be 41 mpg - and that is simply motorway driving. When I drive in town etc, I get about 15 mpg. Something seems horribly wrong with that.

Any thoughts ?

poss Catalytic converter breakdown...

only because my mums Renault Laguna had similar symptoms and that was found to be the cause (and by the improvement in its power and economy since seems proven!!!)

bad fuel consumption? My 1.1 205 takes a full tank for 350 miles if I'm not doing a consistent 57mph, at which point i get a nice 450 miles per tank but dont get anywhere in a sensible time :D

"My 1.1 205 takes a full tank for 350 miles"

How big is the tank on your car though ? Mine has a suprisingly large,

60 litre tank.

Hello,

60 ? 205s should have a 50L tank, 44L main tank, 6L res. tank.

It's quite common, sadly.

how can i check it myself, short of going to a garage to get it done. its just had an mot and its emmissions were fine - i can only guess this would be an indicator of a fault.

It would be difficult! :( These things can go quickly, so it may be worth getting another emissions test done. If you've not had the car long, you'll likely not notice a deterioration in performance and fuel consumption...
