It probably would be useful if we knew what car/model it was!!
Just as a check, assuming that your carpets are dry now, wet your fingers & then press them into the carpet to pick up some residue. Then taste your fingers (yes, I am serious).
If the residue tastes sweet & your fingers are sticky, then the water source could be from your Cooling/Heater System (you are tasting anti-freeze). If it tastes of detergent/soap, then it could be from your Windscreen Wash Bottle. Obviously, any other taste (or non-taste) would indicate a rain-water leak.
This probably hasn't answered your question but will, hopefully, eliminate some other possibilities.
