It either clunks or just completely locks and the back end of the car rises right up (rear brake sticking on or something??) if I park with my handbrake on then its even worse. I have to park in gear, but then it still does it but not as bad. Its fine going forwards. it?s a peugeot

Been there done that too Peter. Strip down the rear brakes and free everything off and lubricate sparingly with copper ease or proper brake grease, fit a new spring kit and examine and consider replacing the short handbrake cables. The outer part of these are plastic coated and water gets trapped inside and corrode/jam up. Almost worth putting new shoes on whilst you are at it.

The parts are not dear if you go to your local motor factors rather than the Pug parts counter

Have a good look at the wheel cylinders while you are there. They are of an age when they have been known to start leaking. It's surprising how gunged up they can get the rear brakes without a noticable drop of fluid level at the master cylinder reservoir. If they need replacing, make sure you get the right ones as there were several different types.
