Lost the Radiator today.

Upon returning from a 108 mile journey today I discovered about a 20 inch diameter wet spot on the driveway after about 20 minutes after I got home. After thinking did I hit a puddle prior to backing up the driveway - the answer turned out to be No.

Lift the hood and look at the radiator pan and its wet on the driver side. Overflow bottle still full. Check the pet c*ck, its tight. Feel the upper hose, its dry, Hey !?, whats this green on the top three ribs of the side tank ?

I removed the radiator shroud for a better look on the forward side of the tanks. Looks like three small cracks on the upper three ribs of the tank, an inch away from the pinch seam. Even the raised ribs are cracked, not just the flat part of the tank. After examining the passenger side tank it to has some very faint fractures.

This is the original Harrison radiator, and never had any repairs. I guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. I mights as well buy a new heater core while I'm at it.

Don't make the mistake I made! Do NOT purchase a plastic / aluminum unit! And don't discard your old unit just yet. You want an all-metal radiator.

It would take pages to detail the headaches I incurred with a plastic crimped unit! It's just unbelievable!

R Barr,

I hear what your saying, but I got 13 years and the mileage listed below out of that radiator, so I'm not complaing about its performance, its never needed service, nor has my friend's, who has his original radiator in an 88 SSE.

Plastic/Aluminum radiator is working just great in my '84 T/A after 20 years and 120K miles. The key is keeping the antifreeze changed every 2-3 years!
