My 2001 Grand Prix SE with 3.1L V6 is clattering like a 4 cylinder at idle. A friend of mine tells me that it sounds like the valve lifters are causing the noise. What's this caused by? The oil is changed relatively regularly.

The 3.1 motor IMHO Sucks. If I am not mistaken, one of the things it loves to do is to cake the oil in the heads... do not ask me why.
Make sure you have enough oil in the engine. Does it only do it when the engine is cold? or all the time?
Could this be a source of a future failure, or is it just a noise that I can live with?

It seems to do it all of the time at idle. Came back from a recent trip a couple of hundred miles away, and even after such a long trip, it did it while idling at a stop light.

it could also be that your ECM cut out some of the valves, mine went all retarded because of some mechanics and Dean Cooley Motors. They basically fried my computer and it thinks the tires are permanently spinning so the ECM is cutting out cylinders to try to make the tires quit spinning but really they arent, lol.
