am I getting screwed?

Took my "new" 944 in for a timing belt... I thought that this job was going to cost about $800ish, I had budgeted $1200 just in case it would be more expensive (as they always find something else wrong.) Well now the guy is talking that he may have to update some plate behind the timing belt? (but he can't tell until he gets in there) and also says I need new motor mounts (I believe that) but anyway the total bill will be somewhere around $2K.

To me this seems kind of out of line and in any case is a problem for me as I am just a poor working slob engineer, and don't make enough money that I have an extra $2K sitting around every month. Does it sound to you guys that I'm getting overcharged or are these charges actually reasonable and I've just been spoiled by my old VWs and need to suck it up and pay?

thanks,

nate

Seems a bit high, but the labor rates in many parts of the country are making Porsche techs quite comfortable these days. Unfortunately, unless you're mechanically adept, and can do much of the labor yourself, you're at their mercy.

Your original budget for the timing belt and possible associated parts (belts, guides, etc) was on target. I haven't had a 944 (T) for some years now, and have not heard about the "plate" update...but I'm sure you'll get some other feedback. The motor mounts have been the subject of much complaining...and the newer, turbo type ones are used on all models (1985.5 onward) to make the car run smoother, quieter, etc.

The "hard" parts cost for all of this is not much...with the motor mounts being the most expensive parts. They can be purchased on-line for @ $50/ea...if that gives you some guide.

Hope this helps...

Nate,

I think you are getting a bit of a screwing. The T-belt and countershaft belt prices have been getting lower every year and labor has gone up, but, this in no way makes that job $800. I had my S2 done about two years ago and it cost a hair under $400.00. This "plate update" sounds like a load of crap. There are two "plates" as far as a 944 are concerned. A flex plate in the tranny if you have an automatic and protective plate on the underside of the engine. Neither one is the subject of an update. If you are having severe shaking or hear a rattle of metal to metal, your mounts may need replacing. Once again, not an expensive job. For the two combined jobs, you should easily get out of there for under $1200.

Plate ? Perhaps you may need to replace some or all of the rollers guiding the belt, but even so the price is too high. Regards, Martin

Take a look at the 944 Technical Forum. You can find out if there's a "plate update", and also get info on estimated repair costs. Most of the guys there do their own work, but they are quite knowledgeable about the cars.
