For Jack Russell, et al...

Jack, Got my hands on the 996 today. One thing that grabs you right off is how the car has been tempered. That rear end push while steering is all but gone. The Carrera's and SC's of the past were a bit tricky to get used to, the 996 was definitely tamer. I did push it pretty hard on an on ramp, u-turn, off ramp and some of it's old style behavior snuck in, but very minimal. I know a lot of 911 owners don't like the temperament, but after owning 944's with their great road manners, I liked it a lot. It was also a

6 speed, which was slightly different. While the 5 speeds of the 944 series gave it's best push in third, it seemed that the 996 shared 3rd and 4th for that purpose. The 6th gear was a very nice touch and makes me want to try a 968 to see how the 6th gear reacts with the 3.0 liter powerplant. Overall, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to get it for a week to play with.

Devs: While I have limited time in older 911s your comments on the 996 mirror my own. We've had our 2002 Carrera for almost two years/14,000 miles. The car is softer riding with more suspension travel and the tendency toward trailing throttle oversteer has been reduced, particularly if you have the optional 18" wheels/tires as we do. If you get to the limit she'll oversteer - there's still a lot of weight on the rears that wants to pass the fronts if you let it. It doesn't have the balance of the 924/944/968 variants so maximizing its potential requires a willingness (and ability) to utilize the oversteer traits. That's probably something best left to a track. But up to 9/10ths of the limit the car is a real joy.

It has a different feel than a 993 - not as edgy, more of a GT feel than the sports car feel of the 993. It does make trips a real pleasure - the car eats miles with ease and comfort.

Let's not get nutty here...I would like to try a 968 with a six speed, not own it.

I have been getting very keen on the 968s. Of course, I would love a Turbo S! (fat chance I know). I have been reading more and more, and it is simply the perfected 944. The fact that they are rare (in comparrison to 944s) is a bonus and the value is holding. I like the S2s, but I would certainly take a 968 is the opportunity arised.
