620 diesel losing water but not overheating.

Has anyone else experienced this?.My high mileage 600 diesel is using a litre of water in 100 miles but never overheats and runs perfectly. It has used a small amount for a year or so but has recently started to get worse particularly on motorway journeys. I suspect a head gasket problem, but am not certain as the water does not seem to be contaminated with oil or the oil with water and there is no evidence of blowback when the filler cap is removed with the engine running., but the water is obviously going somewhere.I am now considering removing the head to check it out but have also heard of some rover engines having a problem with pourous blocks.

It _could_ be a tiny split in a hose, which opens up slightly under the increased pressure when the engine is hot and running. This is less of a problem than a knackered head gasket, but can be a royal pain to track down. With that sort of consumption, and no oil/water or water/oil contamination, I would expect to see water vapour in the exhaust if the Hgasket has gone.

Just interested, what is "high mileage"?

Mine has only got 73000 on but runs ok.

Most likely to be a leaky pipe/join. The water pump is belt-driven from the engine. So more revs means more pressure. Go drive you car round till it's hot, then park up and get someone to hold it at high revs whilst you look for a leak.
