Check engine light

Hi All,

How do I turn off the check engine light? The car won't pass inspection with it on. I tried disconnecting the battery but nothing happened. I found some check engine code readers/erasers on EBay here

Has anyone tried similar one?

Thanks,

It would help to know the year, model, and where you are, but...

You need to get the code and fix the problem. If you don't fix the problem, the light will just come back on.

If your inspection jurisdiction does a real OBDII inspection (96 and newer), they will hook a reader up to it and find any pending emissions-related codes, even if the light is off. In order to pass inspection (in many places), the computer must show that certain onboard tests have passed. Resetting the light will also reset these tests, and you will still fail. You have to drive the car a certain amount before the tests will show as passed, and if the problem still exists, you will get the light again.

If you just have a visual inspection, and the light needs to be off, you can reset it just before you go in, and hope for the best. Many auto parts stores will read the code and reset the light for free.

Hi, Disconnect the battery. Leave it disconnected for > 5 mins. My car was missing and the check engine light was on.

I took of the distributor cap which had oil and water on the inside. Cleaned it with some kitchen roll. Reset the check engine light. everything seems fine now, fingers crossed.

Most common issue is a loose or bad gas cap. But, have the code read. If you are in the USA, Autozone will read it for you. The second most common problem is a bad DI cassette - that is something you should fix as it will not be long before you car stops moving.

Get the code checked and post again.
