classic 900 clutch advice

Hi my '90 classic 900i seems to have a problem with the clutch, when I've been driving for a while theres no resistance in the pedal and it can be very hard to get in gear. If I lightly pump the pedal resistance builds back up and it seems to be ok, though it still grinds going into reverse even with foot pressed hard to the floor (though this doesnt happen all the time). I've checked the brake/clutch fluid and it seems fine - the two compartments side by side are ok. Someone suggested bleeding the clutch system, otherwise I've also seen the problem that can occur in the clutch pedal arm (enlarged pin hole). Any suggestions as to what I should try first and how to go about it would be much appreciated. Regards, Gwilym.

Classic signs of air in the lines, yes.

That's your fix.

Yes, it's likely to be worn, but the symptoms you describe don't match that as being the problem for your car. That only adds a bit of slop at the top of the stroke, it doesn't change things dramatically as you're describing. Definately an air situation.

Might be as easy as opening the bleeder nipple on the slave cylinder, letting the fluid (and hopefully, bubbles) escape there, while keeping the reservoir topped off. Let it run until it comes out clear rather than the black crud that's in there. Either way that won't hurt to do, and it's likely to fix your problem. If not, there are a couple other options.

If you're bleeding the clutch using a pressure bleeder, make sure you keep the fluid reservoir quite full while you're doing it. ALthough the line to the clutch master comes from the bottom of the reservoir, the inlet is actually surprisingly high up inside the tank.

From my workshop I was told they used a spesial tool for this. I made one from a syringe and a narrow plastic tube . With the syringe I made a wacum to bleed the air from the clutch side. It worked. Bleeding like you normaly bleed a brake system did not work out.

Good luck!
