Clutch on 97 900SE

I could really use some expert opinion here. My wife was driving her

1997 900SE Turbo when she felt a clunk in the shifter handle...then within a few minutes the clutch seemed to fail. The only gear that would work was reverse...but 1-5 was out. She got a shove to the side of the street...downtown Seattle...then realized that she was in the way of a delivery access, put it in reverse and was able to back up. So...AAA towtruck to a SAAB mechanic, driver said it was likely the clutch cable...SAAB mechanic looked at it and told her that the clutch cable (I was under the impression that it was a hydro clutch-guess not) had stretched out and needed to be replaced. She left it there and the next morning I spoke with the guy...he said that he replaced the cable...but the car would not go. He put it up off of the floor and then tried it...and the wheels worked...all gears worked...but on the ground it would not move. He said that the clutch had 40-50% left on it, and also had burns on it... but he could not figure out what was wrong. He put in a new clutch and it worked fine.

Can anybody suggest how this is possible? Or...did I get jobbed?
