clutch-related squeal

Hi, my '91 900S just began making a cold-start squealing sound when I release the clutch after shifting into first gear. It is (currently) fairly brief and only seems to happen when the engine is cold (or at least has not been run in awhile). This morning it squealed/screetched for a few seconds after shifting into first. Depressing the clutch made the screetching stop, but it resumed when the clutch was released again. Again this evening coming home from work the same thing happened, but for longer. I shifted into second and it stopped, not sure if it was a coincidence or not.

Is this a bearing issue? From searching the newsgroups that usually seems to be described as a "whirring" noise.

Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst :)

Has your crankshaft pulley ever been replaced?

I don't know. I bought the car only recently as a "spare" -- it has about 176k miles, only 4k that I've put on.

So symptom could be indicative of crankshaft pulley needing replacement?

I think it could. The typical symptom is a squeal when you first start the car (cold engine) which goes away quickly at first, and progressively less quickly as it gets worse. I was thinking that maybe there is no clutch involvement, and the squealing appears in first gear simply because that's where you are when you rev the engine for the first time after starting it. Subsequently the pulley gets hot (quickly), and stops squealing.

This is just a theory of course. Maybe you could try reving the engine a bit in neutral right after you start the car, and see if it still happens?

Does anyone else care to offer competing theories?

"Does anyone else care to offer competing theories"?

Could be a cat stuck in the engine compartment?.. This happened to a neighbour of mine once. The squealing stopped after a couple of days..
